Newcastle Coastal Revitalisation - Update

The Newcastle Bogey Hole is listed on the State’s Heritage Register as a State Significant Item. The Bogey Hole bathing pool was formed by convict labour around 1820 by the excavation of the coastal rock platform and the pool has been open for public use for over 150 years.

Commencement of Public Access Restoration Works

Work to restore safe public access to Newcastle’s iconic Bogey Hole has reached further milestones with the engagement of construction contractors “Wardrope & Carroll Engineering Pty Ltd” and the commencement of site works.

The restoration work involves the installation of a new stairway and pool access platform along with the reinstatement of the historic post and chain fence which surrounds the pool.

Materials for the new access features have been selected for their durability in the coastal environment, to fit in with the site’s natural features and to allow interpretation of the historical elements.

Much of the new stairway and pool access platform will be built in the contractor’s factory and when complete transported to the Bogey Hole site in sections for installation.

While it is anticipated the project will be finished by the end of April 2012, this time frame is highly dependent on favourable weather and ocean conditions.

In accordance with the approval from the NSW Heritage Council for the project, detailed photographic recording of the existing historical elements of the Bogey Hole has been undertaken and an expert heritage advisor has also been engaged by Crown Lands to oversee the project.

The community is reminded that access to the Bogey Hole is currently not safe and the safety warnings should be obeyed. Access to the site will be restricted during the restoration works.
Restoration of safe access to the Bogey Hole is consistent with the Newcastle Coastal Revitalisation Strategy and the improvements are expected to be of great benefit to the community for many years to come.
