Waterways Program

Dredging Initiative

The Land and Property Management Authority is committed to the sustainable management of the State’s waterways for multiple use where environmental outcomes and community expectations can be met. The Waterways Program is one example of how partnerships between State and local government can make significant improvements to the navigability of the State’s waterways for recreational boating.

Funding announcement

The NSW Government has announced a further round of funding under the Waterways Program to improve waterway conditions for boating enthusiasts.

The Minister for Lands has invited councils to apply for a share of the $500,000 funding package to help pay for dredging projects to make significant improvements for recreational boating enthusiasts to access the State’s waterways where navigation has become restricted over time due to shoaling.

Funding is conditional on councils agreeing to match the State government’s contribution and to managing the project. This means $1 million is effectively available towards government's ongoing investment in our State's waterways.

How to apply for funding

Councils are now invited to prepare and submit to the Land and Property Management Authority (LPMA) their dredging proposal(s) to improve navigation for recreational vessels in its local government area.

Funding will be made available for both preconstruction activities (including environmental assessments) and implementation and will be for up to 50% of the approved cost of the work.

For a dredging proposal to be considered it must meet the objectives of the program and provide the essential information detailed in the:

NSW Waterways Program - Funding Guidelines for Dredging of Navigable Waterways (PDF 84 kb);  and

Conditions for Financial Assistance (PDF 92 kb).

Successful projects will be determined on the strengths and merits of the project, statewide priorities and the estimated costs stated in Council’s detailed dredging proposal.

Enquiries relating to the Waterways Program should be directed to Mr Andrew Ling (telephone: 4920 5056).

Submission of detailed proposals will be received in writing until 15 October 2010 addressed to:
