Authority acquires Hunters Hill sites

In 2009 the State Property Authority acquired property at 7 and 9 Nelson Parade, Hunters Hill, Sydney from NSW Health. NSW Health had previously purchased the sites after testing found the sites were not suitable for residential purposes.

These properties contain residues from a uranium processing plant, which operated on the site from 1911-1916. The plant was run by the Radium Hill Company, a commercial enterprise that no longer exists. The Authority also later acquired 11 Nelson Parade from NSW Health in 2009.

Remediation planning begins

The government requested the Authority to undertake remediation on 7, 9 and 11 Nelson Parade and manage the future sale of the sites. The Authority is working closely with the Environmental Protection Authority, NSW Health, NSW Planning and Infrastructure, NSW Maritime and specialist consultants to plan and manage the remediation.

Environmental consultants appointed

The Authority appointed Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB), one of the world’s leading planning and environmental firms, as lead environmental consultants for the remediation project.

Material to be prepared for public exhibition

The environmental consultant, PB, will prepare the environmental assessment (EA) for lodgement with the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure, which will then place the EA on public exhibition and seek comments.

PB has completed a range of background studies, which together with the remediation action plan (RAP) will allow an assessment of the impacts of the remediation works. The Authority and PB are developing a range of safety and management plans to monitor, manage and mitigate any impacts during the works. Once complete, they will be included in the EA.

Remediation contractors appointed

The Authority has also appointed Enviropacific Services (Enviropacific) as the remediation contractor. Enviropacific has extensive experience in this field, in both government and industry remediation projects. Enviropacific’s work methods and environmental and safety procedures will be documented in the RAP.

Material testing

The material to be disposed of has been tested and classified as Restricted Solid Waste and can be disposed at an appropriately-licensed landfill site. To ensure full compliance with the standards for disposal of this material, and to ensure workers and the public are fully protected, all excavations and material leaving the site will be monitored by ANSTO and any material that does not fall within the standards for Restricted Solid Waste will be separately managed and removed for safe storage.

Public consultation

The Authority will continue its public consultation and publication of newsletters which are available on this site up to and during the exhibition of the EA and during the remediation works.
