The State Property Authority is committed to being recognised as a centre of excellence in sustainable property in Government. This is underpinned by an Executive endorsed Sustainability Strategy, which was developed in consultation with key stakeholders.
The Strategy details the Authority's actions to implement the broader undertakings of NSW Sustainability Policy, but goes one step further to outline the actions to deliver on the Authority's commitment to become a leader in the field.
In May 2008, the Premier announced new benchmarks for environmental performance by Government agencies. These benchmarks are outlined in Premier's Memorandum 2008-28 - Sustainability Policy for the New South Wales Government.
For the State Property Authority, the key requirements are:
- all Government owned or tenanted office buildings over 1,000m2 to obtain 4.5 star environmental performance rating (NABERS) for both energy and water efficiency by 1 July 2011
- a 15% reduction in water consumption across all budget dependent agencies.
The Authority maintains a strong focus on addressing the environmental performance and sustainability of the Governments owned and leased Property Portfolio.
This includes energy and water saving initiatives and implementing a progressive strategy to achieve the Governments sustainability benchmarks. The strategy focuses on:
- Integration of sustainability into operational portfolio management
- Management of the Authoritys corporate response to sustainability
- Awareness, education and stakeholder engagement.
This will be achieved through initiatives including green lease schedules, a retrofit program to upgrade existing buildings in line with NABERS targets, improved metering and monitoring and developing sustainability tools and templates to assist agencies in improving the environmental performance of their office accommodation.
