Sculpture initiative takes art to The Entrance

the stack by Michael Purdy

A Council-managed reserve at The Entrance has benefited from an initiative to enhance Crown reserves with sculptures.

A sandstone sculpture by award-winning artist Michael Purdy, called ‘the stack’, has been installed at Marine Parade as a gift from the NSW Government to the local community.

The idea for the initiative arose out of the Land and Property Management Authority’s sponsorship of Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi, a popular exhibition almost entirely located on Crown land which not everyone can get to see.

Under this initiative sculptures are being brought to local communities, linking the city and country people and enhancing Crown reserves.

The stack was one of the works in this year’s Sculpture by the Sea and Michael Purdy was a people’s choice winner there in 2005 and has won other art awards.

The NSW Government supports the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition as part of its commitment to actively encourage the public to use and enjoy the state’s seaside parks and reserves.

The sculpture will become a central feature of the broader lake and coastal foreshore integrated development and beautification program.

$800,000 funding was also announced for key foreshore works at The Entrance.

The money from the Public Reserves Management Fund (PRMF) will be used for extending and completing the Coast to Lake Scenic walk which extends for approximately 7.5kms around the tip of The Entrance Peninsula.

In addition, the funding will allow for an upgrade to picnic point including an additional children’s playground area and a fitness station.
