Bellingen Showground marks its centenary

The Bellingen Showground Reserve Trust is busy preparing to celebrate its centenary in 2011 and is planning to mark the occasion by carrying out some major and much needed refurbishment work on the showground's two main buildings.

Caroline Joseph, the Trust secretary, said the main pavilion and the luncheon pavilion had served the local community for 100 years and were used constantly for a wide variety of activities, as well as by an organic market which has operated in the grounds every fortnight for the past nine years.

She said: "There's a growing need in our community for a small venue, so we feel that if we can get some funding we're in a good position to contribute to the work. We've all been working really hard over the last five years with fundraising so we've got some money in the bank and we can contribute to the refurbishment."

"The luncheon pavilion is probably the most used building we have but its very hot in summer and very cold in winter. We've put insulation in the ceiling and were now about to put windows in and replace the latticework, preserving the heritage look of the building.

As well as the refurbishment work, there is also the possibility the Trust could hold a Showground Trust Conference this spring to discuss issues that Trusts in the area face.

"I'd like to hold a conference and invite people from all the showgrounds in our region to get together and talk about what showground people talk about," Caroline said.
